Trend-free Zone!
My admiration for fashion stems from its liberating element;
in other words, we put our foot in some shoes, and suddenly we feel like a
different person. We can travel across eras and places, or transform into our
favorite character in a movie, merely by dressing like it!
I was impressed by Anna Wintour’s statement about New York
autumn/winter 2015 fashion week that: “Trend is a dirty word!” She mentioned
that fashion today is more about our “individuality” and “character”, instead of trends.
And isn’t this what the “modern woman” is all about? I
believe we are the empowered generation of women, who does not
want to be constrained by the definitions of trendiness and style dictated by fashion
authorities. The modern woman is someone
who boldly takes risks, and dresses as she wishes. And, that is what
I call a trendy woman!
This non-committal sense of style is particularly more evident
at the recent fashion weeks. For instance, at the fall/winter 2015 Prada
runway, the 50s influence was easily discernible through the long-sleeve gloves, or
the structural and couture-like pieces, whereas, Karl Lagerfeld took
inspirations in the modern architectural structures of Rome for his recent
collection for Fendi.
Burberry’s collection, on the other hand, was reminiscent of the 70s bohemian style, which was conveyed through the incorporation of flowy silhouettes, eastern-inspired patterns, and warm colors. And then we had Jeremy Scott who dressed his models in doll-like outfits, with colorful prints which he took from a baby’s nursery!
