The Gender Bender!
Walking down the Fashion galleries of the Victoria and Albert museum in London, and browsing through the clothing displays organized chronologically from 1750 to present, the most remarkable difference that grabbed my attention instantly was the gender-based demarcation in the outfits that has been exponentially eroding in the past few years!
The androgyny trend has gained more prominence in the 21st century inspired by the civil rights movement and now thanks to the fashion industry and pop culture is has been taken to the next level!
This phenomena is vividly apparent in the New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2015 like never before, and I personally love this trend! Gender does not specify what you can or cannot wear anymore! Dressing up is now about how you want to express yourself regardless of you sexual orientation.
On Public School NYFW 2015 runway, the male and female models were dressed in outfits that looked basically the same, and it was merely by the models' faces that we could distinguish their gender!
Many runways at NYFW 2015, including Michael Kors, DKNY, and NO.21, were flooded with head-to-toe masculine looks with suits in dark tones and comfortable fabrics for their womenswear. And with the blurring lines in gender roles, as well as the unprecedented involvement of women in the society these days, it makes sense that comfortable clothing, which was conventionally appropriate for men, is now equally embraced by women.
And now, let's look at the other side! A world where men can wear hot pink floral fur jackets, and tight animal-printed shorts, while disheveling their golden (and maybe chemically-treated) locks over their chiseled (and usually hairless) bodies.
For many years, men were only expected to wear dull outfits with dark shades, and merely for the sole purpose of their functionality. However, nowadays we see many heterosexual men experimenting with their style and pulling off looks with colorful and elaborated patterns and silhouettes borrowed from the girls. And, I have to say, it definitely looks good on them!
I personally love the androgyny trend since it's liberating for both sexes. We are not still bound by our sexuality, or in other words, the conventional and clear-cut roles given by society based on our sexuality, to dress ourselves.
